Location:
The Carter Creek Ranch is located approximately 10 miles east of Dillon, Montana on Sweetwater Road. Sweetwater Road runs east from Dillon and continues through the Sweetwater Basin and intersects Highway 28 at the small town of Alder, Montana. Dillon is the service center for most services needed by the ranch. There are no public easements anywhere on this large ranch. The ranch also borders several other large ranches, therefore privacy is certain on the Carter Creek Ranch. The Carter Creek Ranch is situated on the east side of the Beaverhead Valley, in an area of the valley which receives about 6" more precipitation per year than the valley floor around Dillon.
Acreage:
500 acres of improved pasture and dry land hay ground
5,303 acres of native pasture and mountain timber ground 5,803 total deeded acres Plus BLM Lease #10534 Carter CreekDillon-County Seat:
Although gold mining was the predominant reason for town growth in the surrounding area, Dillon originated because of the Utah & Northern Railroad. As the railroad was building north toward Butte in 1880, winter set in ceasing their progress. When the railroad started north again in 1881, the town remained. It was named Dillon in honor of the president of the Union Pacific Railroad, Sidney Dillon. Some of the states most famous cattle ranches are found in Beaverhead County. This county is the largest in the state and is responsible for producing more cattle and more hay than any other county. Drive through the famous Big Hole Valley, The land of a thousand haystacks, and see some of this rich ranching tradition. Bannack and Grasshopper Creek are incredible tours that offer a chance to see how things happened all those years ago. If you plan one trip, make sure to be in Dillon on Labor Day weekend. Attend a beautiful parade, large professional rodeo and top it off with a concert put on by the Jaycees which has a new top country act every year.
Recreation:
Recreation on the Carter Creek Ranch is second to none. This property has resident elk and Mule Deer herds on the property. Elk in the 300 class have been seen and trophy Mule Deer come out of the woodwork during the peak of the rut. A large number of antelope reside on the lower portion of the ranch with bucks in the 15 inch class. Many other animals from large to small call the ranch home. This ranch comes with a upland bird preserve permit in place and will transfer with the sale of the ranch. This property is prime habitat for several species of upland birds. If you are the total outdoorsman you will be centrally located to a number of famous rivers and streams. The Big Hole and Beaverhead rivers are just down the road and rivers such as the Madison, Jefferson, Bitterroot, Gallatin, Missouri and Clark Fork are within a short drive. Great skiing, camping and hiking are found in the immediate area as well.
Shooting Preserve:
In the state of Montana, shooting preserves cannot be located within 10 miles of each other. Because there are already enough in the surrounding area, this preserve permit adds a lot of value to the Carter Creek Ranch. This permit requires that you turn out at least 100 birds per year but allows you to release as many as you would like. The rolling foothills and steep coulees make for exceptional Chukar habitat. The lower end of the ranch, on the native pasture, you will find great Hungarian Partridge habitat. The Creek bottoms and coulees are a great place to release pheasants. If you are looking to supplement the ranch by charging for hunters, or just trying to start a viable population for yourself and your family, this is the perfect opportunity.
Agriculture:
Agriculture is the number one industry in Beaverhead County. It produces cattle, sheep, horses, hay, grain, seed potatoes, canola, and waxy barley. Beaverhead County ranks number one for cattle production, hay acres harvested, and sheep production in the state.
